French Bulldog Information

Health, Care, & Safety Tips

Collar or Harness? Harnesses are the safest choice for a French Bulldog. Collars can increase the chance for neck injuries while leash training. It is recommended that you remove all collars and harnesses while at home.

Can Frenchies swim? Not generally. A pet life jacket should be used around any body of water.

Is it normal for my Frenchie to sleep a lot? Yes, French Bulldogs sleep and rest half the day.  They are low energy level and can go on short walks. Frenchies do love to play fetch.

What are common health problems in this breed? Breathing issues such as elongated soft palates and stenotic nares are common due to short snout. Some minor eye problems like cherry eye. Some dogs carry genetic back/spine issues, VWD and thyroid issues. If you are concerned about these issues then ask the breeder if their dogs have been tested.

What routine dog care should I provide my new pet? French Bulldogs are not a high maintenance breed. Typical hygiene routines include weekly ear cleaning, teeth cleaning and face wrinkles wiped & checked. Bathe 1-2 times per month. Nails should be trimmed regularly so they do not slip or make their feet not sit flush. Females may regularly need their vaginal folds wiped to prevent UTI's.  Discuss with your vet which vaccinations your pet may need annually.

How long does it take to potty train my dog? It can take 8 months to a year to potty train a French Bulldog. Consistency is key!

What should I feed my French Bulldog? A high quality raw and/or Grain free diet is best for this breed. Please consult with your vet what is the best food for your dog.
